“Huh?”

“My parents. Over there!”

“Oh!” Abby looked up to see Ian pointing at a couple just a few feet ahead, beaming wildly. She quickly shoved the guidebook she’d been reading on the train into her tote bag before having a chance to wonder what a conurbation was. She supposed it didn’t really matter, and she could always look it up later, anyway.

Abby self-consciously smoothed her hair. She hadn’t had a chance to check herself in a mirror after the ride, and she wasn’t feeling her freshest. But judging from the looks on Ian’s parents’ faces, no one minded in the least. She could see, now, where Ian got his sparkling green eyes, because his father was grinning at her with the very same ones. And while his mother was petite and curvy, Ian’s father was tall with the same broad chest that Abby adored. Both looked incredibly happy to meet her. Which helped her nerves some, but not all.

“Abby,” Ian said, “these are my parents.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Abby said, holding out her hand to shake.

“Likewise, dear. I’m Eleanor, and this is Marcus. We’re so thrilled to have you! We hadn’t figured on Ian coming home over the summer, so this is a real treat.” She winked. “And we never get to meet his ‘friends.”’ She placed special emphasis on the word friends, much to Abby’s embarrassment.
